Midwest Engineering – Social Housing (Medicine Hat, AB)
How Midwest Engineering and Strato Automation modernized a 20,000 sq. ft. public service facility in Medicine Hat

The Challenge
The Public Service Office in Medicine Hat needed more than a standard HVAC controls solution. As a social housing and municipal building, the project required:
- Reliable integration of a VAV zoning system with smart BACnet RTUs
- Improved visibility and control for a remote site
- Simplified system architecture with fewer panels and less wiring
- A scalable, future-ready automation platform
Midwest Engineering needed a solution that was flexible, easy to deploy, and simple to support in a service-driven environment.
The Strato Solution
Midwest Engineering chose Strato Automation’s open BACnet platform, delivering:
- A complete Strato system, from OCN+ Server to zone-level controllers
- Seamless integration with smart BACnet RTUs
- BZ424 VAVs and BP848 controllers for precise zoning control
- VPN-enabled web access for secure remote visibility and operation
- Reduced wiring and simpler panels by leveraging onboard RTU sensing points
This approach provided a clean, efficient system that was easy to engineer, deploy, and support.
The Impact
The result? Faster deployment, simpler operation, and full visibility into a remote municipal facility, all on a platform designed for service teams.
“Strato Automation made the engineering, setup, and delivery of the project a snap. Anyone with basic controls knowledge in a mechanical service environment can work with and utilize their systems. ”
